HELP! Uploading DV to mac book pro

It seems I have run into a situation. I just shot some footage on the Panasonic DVX 100A. It looks great by the way... On the camera's little monitor. I ran a fire wire cable from the camera to my Mac book pro and the tried to import it into iMovie 06 (Before you judge, I don't have FC)

It sees that my iMovie claims there was no camera attached and wouldn't import. I tried all the solutions the internet and help menu suggested
Turning on and off Camera/Computer
pulling the cable and reconnecting,
Even setting the time stamp on the camera. Still nothing. So I tried on my iMac G5 Desk top also iMovie 06 AND iMovie 08! I tried both fire wire ports and NOTHING! My iSight was recognized but not the DVX

Suggestions please?

Also I know someone who owns an OLD OLD DV camera. I have used it in the past and I know it can upload footage to both lap and desk top, If I use this camera for a play back to upload, will I suffer quality loss in the picture?

It almost sounds like the camera's firewire port isn't working. Has it worked before? Borrow your friends camera to verify the ports on the machines. I wouldn't expect a hit in quality or any problems using that older camera to import as they're both standard def cameras. Using as inexpensive camcorder as a deck for importing fottage isn't a bad idea as it saves wear & tear on the mechanism of your newer flagship camera.

    Simple set up check list:
    1. make sure your camera / vtr is ON before opening your program.
    2. Have your imported footage before into your current system?
    3. set your preferences for "Firewire basic"
    4. Swap out your Firewire cable or try different ports.

Since you have tried on several systems .. Iʻm leaning towards a bad cable. But then again without knowing all your specs and the steps you took .. its kind of a shot in the dark.

just be sure to double check your settings and prefs...
