Hi all -- I'm wondering.

I'm bidding on a "fitness DVD" series. I don't have any parameters of the job yet (this is preliminary), but aside from standard estimating parameters (hard and soft variables, adjustments for value, risk, etc), I also recognize that overall pricing may vary based on the region of our country where the work is performed.

If any of you have produced a fitness or dance DVD and are willing to share, where was the project performed and what was the budget for the project?

Thanks in advance!

  • If you dont have parameters..... it is difficult to know how
much time and resources it will take...

Start with an estimate of $5k..... and see how they re-act.

If they balk @ that - walk away - as they can potentially make so
    much money....

And make sure you get a percentage of each sale,
esp if they dont have exact specs to what they want you to do.

Just a " little change" and then re-encoding could eat up HOURS.

    • OH yeah.. scope creep can be a bitch if left undetected or unresponded to.

Without *any* parameters, it's virtually impossible to estimate anything -- obviously I can scale up or down the production value based on budget, to some extent. Once I have a detailed talk with the prospective client I can put together a more accurate estimate --- but I was figuring that if anyone on this Tribe has done an instructional DVD, you might have a general idea for amount of effort (time/resources) it took you, and what the market is used to for this type of thing.

$5K certainly seems like a reasonable guestimate with no other factors known.

FYI, I think they want to own all distribution and replication/duplication rights .. if they pay me enough for production, I'm OK without a VIG/%-of-sale. If they want to negotiate less, I'd obviously want a % of sale for accepting that risk.
