I recently shot a short film on the Panasonic DVX 100A. The video was shot at 16:9, When I imported it into iMovie I wasn't paying attention and I imported, and I just "Imported the footage" without checking settings (I didn't know... My desk top is older and iMovie didn't have those options, appently my Laptop being a Macintel, iMovie does) So the footage was imported as Standard 4:3
It wasn't until AFTER I completed the edit, had the sound design done, original composition in place and ready to "print", that we noticed and the director asked me why it wasn't 16:9 and can we change it back?
Can I? Without distorting the image?
I am using iMovie HD. It wasn't until AFTER I made this error that I realized I could have imported the footage in at 16:9 HD

Re: iMovie HD and Aspect Ratio
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 4:40 PMToo bad you didn't edit in FCP, as you could just re-capture the footage and reconnect it to the edit timeline -- instant fix.
Is the video distorted now -- i.e. is it anamorphic? If it is, under your Expert Settings when you Share (export) on iMovie HD, you can change the video size back to 16:9, and I think that it will stretch it back to the right size. The export function gives you lots of options -- try it out. -

Re: iMovie HD and Aspect Ratio
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 5:24 PMGood call Allen-
that should do it- Also you could always import back into QTPRO or EYEMOOVY and follow the above-
good luck

Re: iMovie HD and Aspect Ratio
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 9:24 PMIf I had FCP... Someday... soon
It's not anamorphic, I know all about the options QTPro. Thank you It was a good suggestion. The problem is if I try to put it back to 16.9 It distorts. Short and fat. I wanted to put it back to 16:9 and keep the image in perspective. I doesn't seem possible. -

Re: iMovie HD and Aspect Ratio
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 1:15 PMwell then you have to manually adjust the aspect ratio- I think its -63? I have not had to do that in awhile but will dig up my old notebook-
I don't use EYEMOOVE so cant tell you if they have a distort setting or not but if u can manually change the scale it should have a distort option-
that would be your best bet-
If you are going to be editing more or even as a pro-sumer you might want to step up your options a bit-
as soon as I find that info i post it here-
hopefully your client is understanding and patient.

Re: iMovie HD and Aspect Ratio
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 2:31 PMSo did you shoot in 4:3 letterbox?
If so, iMovie is simply zooming into the footage to create faux 16:9 while capturing. The DVX100a doesn't shoot real 16:9 -- it's either letterboxed or anamorphic. I'm guessing (since I haven't done this) that importing a 4:3 letterboxed shoot as 16:9 simply crops the image. There doesn't seem to be a way to use iMovie to fix your problem after capture. But -- I found these crop and zoom plugins for iMovie:
www.versiontracker.com/dyn/mo...3/16544
You can fix the entire movie very fast in FCP (moot point for you, I guess) and it won't reduce the quality any more than iMovie would have.
