Nightmare video production experience with locals

I should have posted here for feedback before I went into this project. I thought that because I saw these guys do some work and because they seemed cool that they would do a good job on the set.
I'm not posting the names because they have enemies out there who want to quote me/ who quoted me from my blog. I don't want to help others fight their battles. I just want to express a terrible situation because it might help keep others from experiencing it for themselves or, even from others making the same mistakes.

I've resisted posting about this because I didn't want to do this. But, the project cost my company about $100,000.
As a representative of my company, I hired ------, a local video crew, to tape my boss doing his thing.
We paid thousands of dollars to these guys for 2 camera men and one real-time video editor plus the use of their equipment for a week. Relatively speaking, their price was a good deal and we invested tens of thousands of dollars into providing the experience to be taped. Altogether, counting our expenses, loss of profits and what we paid them, the bill comes out to between $80-100,000 for us.
I was assured by X and X at ---- that he and his crew had the experience and professional skill to manage the task. They talked a great talk and they were very kind during the initial interview I had with them when I went to their office to discuss the project. So, I decided to hire them for the production. They seemed like good natured, alternative-types.
Unfortunately, it turns out that was all an act. Not only did they turn out to be major drama queens with a tendency to make vicious personal attacks filled with covert sexism. (For those who do not know, covert "sexism" does not mean sexual misconduct. It means inequality based on gender.)
They created a terrible situation for me at my work that has many repercussions. Finally, eventhough it is fixable with money and time, final product is not what we asked for and for us is unusable in the state it is. They didn't bother to render it out of the program they were using to capture, so it is in Final Cut Pro. We asked for movie files that could be used by any program, that were ready to view. We told them we didn't have Macs and that we expected something readibly usable- which they said they would render the terabyte of files to the Quicktime format. But, I guess they decided that we didn't need that. They claim they made .MOV files for us, but alas, that is only minor compared to the rest of the situation. We can buy the $1,000 program to fix that. We don't want to, but we will.

Getting back to the work they did: A good deal of the footage is unusable because the camera angles were not monitored. The camera men preferred to sleep and "watch the show" as an audience member rather than actively seek to do the best job possible. Granted, this project was 7 days long and long hours. They said they could do it. But, they didnt even try. They were clear on the situation going into the project. One of their crew did a test run and was able to observe the whole thing before it started.
Regarding the final footage: When people are talking often their face is cut off or their hand gestures are occuring partly-in and partly-out of frame. This is especially true for the main star of the show. I knew this was happening all along, but whenever I mentioned to the guys anything about their performance I was met with EXTREME anger and excuses. I was told that we could do "editing" magic to get around all their mistakes. After a few small comments spread out of the course of 3 days regarding behavior and performance that didn't meet our expectations I was met with extreme defiance and aggression that was out of proportion to the situation and the reaction did not make sense. They keep telling me that I am not their client and that I have no right to interact with them. They were not saying that when they accepted the job offer from me and they expressed nothing but 100% willingness to work with me before they had money-in-hand. They definetely used me to get the job and then discarded me when I became an inconvenient witness to their dysfunctional and unprofessional work style.
The comments I made were:
1. when one of the members was asleep for over two hours on a couch I walked by and said, "whatcha doing?".
2. when the star of the show -my boss- didn't know his mic was not turned on and we were about an hour into the taping, I went and had it turned on because the sound engineer, aware of the problem and with no intention of fixing it, said it could be fixed post-production. I was not satisfied with letting sound come out poorly due to laziness. (These guys were not hired to do post-production.) Turning the mic on took about 30 seconds, 1 minute max. I went and made a hand gesture and the mic was thus turned on but I received a severe screaming-at from X, the sound guy.
3. I presented them with a service contract because they wanted a deposit payment before the end of the production because they needed rent money, so, eventhough X previously said he would create a contract, I ended up doing it because I wasn't about to give them a deposit before we had a contract and X didn't produce one.

By the 3rd comment (presenting them with a contract) they seemingly felt that the above few comments I made were "micro-managing" and they violently yelled and screamed at me to stay out of their "business".
Eventhough I was the only contact from my office that they had for the entire project, and it was given to me to manage (by my boss) those guys arbitrarily claimed that I didn't have any authority to represent the company I worked for. They never gave any reasonable explanation for their change in attitude outside of quoting the above comments I made as being "micro-managing".
It was all a very terrible and stressful experience.
My boss did not know what to think. He now accusingly asks me why I brought those guys into our space. They have caused a good deal of fear and stress around here. My boss caries a big grudge about the whole thing.
After they kicked and screamed about the contract, then signed it, the crew stated that they would only be able to go on if I left them alone. I had to protect our investment. We had invested ten of thousands of dollars on getting 5 people to stay for a whole 7 days to participate in this project and $30-$40,000 on a test run before we went ahead with this final production. So, I left the office for four days. I worked from home.
Eventhough I left the building, two days later X walked off the project. I'm not sure of the circumstances, but it wasn't due to sickness or emergency- it had something to do with anger. My boss still won't comment. I'm sensing he is afraid of something.

Even before X left, the crew of 3 was really only two. We hired them as a crew of two camera men and one real-time editor and sound engineer but they decided that they would have one camera man always on break. The days were 17 hours, but the middle 6-8 hours were inactive- nothing to do- and each day was separated by 12 hours of sleep. So, the only camera guy on duty should have at least been standing up trying to actively watch the 3 cameras. But, that person was always sitting in a chair only somewhat monitoring the cameras. Often, the person monitoring all of the video feeds would need to get up from the editing table and adjust cameras while the camera guy would be absorbed in watching the show. The person who was always watching the monitor could have handled keeping an eye on the cameras, except that the camera man had no way to keep in communication with the person viewing the monitors. The crew seemed to think it was perfectly acceptable to sit in a chair and get absorbed in watching the "show" rather than actively seeking to keep the cameras on point.
Funny thing is, the main camera man keeps contacting my boss and telling him what an amazing experience he had. We charged for people to come watch. This guy, X, is acting like one of the audience. Many audience members have sent us letters thanking us for the experience. None more so than X, the camera guy. He spent most of his time sitting in a laz-y-boy, absorbed in watching the show rather than concentrating on the task.

These guys make attacks on my personal character whenever they are asked about the situation. I expect to receive comments that will demonstrate the types of comments and attacks they make. Somehow they think that by making personal attacks, they can cover up for their lack of professionalism. That, however, is exactly the kind of un- professional behavior that made working with them a nightmare and also contributed to the situation where they could not "hear" our needs as a client and it is one of the main reasons why they failed in terms of their performance on the project.
One of them has repeatedly asked me if I would put this behind "us" so we could be friends. I think he just doesn't ever have to deal with back-lash (like this public review).

To be fair: this review does not speak to their performance as visual projectionists. That is a completely different side of their business. This review is in regards to a small video project containing 2-3 cameras and sound and their general ability to behave professionally.
In my opinion, these guys should be avoided. I don't trust them.
Plus, on both projects we had equipment come up missing. We never have equipment of ours go missing. So, I believe they are very irresponsible when it comes to packing their gear up.

Thanks for reading.
This review is my experience. It does not reflect the opinions of any one else.
In this day and age, people who provide bad service can reasonable expect to get a review online.
That is what this is: a review.
The internet is full of thousands of reviews of bad service. If you are in the service sector you should consider customer service as one of the main parts of creating a successful business.
If you don't, you may want to learn from this.

If you are looking to hire someone and you want to know who this is about you can feel free to ask me. I haven't posted their names, but I don't mind revealing the information.
Also, to give you an idea of the low character of these folks, the people whom this refers to have involved others. They are unashamed and rather proud at involving others to hold hard feelings towards me, people whom I hardly know suddenly expressing seriously cruel opinions towards me.
If you are in the business as a customer or provider:
Good Luck!

Auditions- Aberrant Behavior- Saturday June 7th @ Mamma Buzz in Oakland arts district

I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. If your interested in the movie you can e-mail me at: aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Other roles as well-Not listed

I recently shot a short film on the Panasonic DVX 100A. The video was shot at 16:9, When I imported it into iMovie I wasn't paying attention and I imported, and I just "Imported the footage" without checking settings (I didn't know... My desk top is older and iMovie didn't have those options, appently my Laptop being a Macintel, iMovie does) So the footage was imported as Standard 4:3

It wasn't until AFTER I completed the edit, had the sound design done, original composition in place and ready to "print", that we noticed and the director asked me why it wasn't 16:9 and can we change it back?

Can I? Without distorting the image?

I am using iMovie HD. It wasn't until AFTER I made this error that I realized I could have imported the footage in at 16:9 HD

Hello!

I was wondering, does anyone know where I could upload some audience reaction shots- besides youtube? I need to get some images that are not compressed. Any ideas?

I am working on a tv talk show spoof, and i would like to use a variety of reaction shots -from different sources if possible.

Thanks!

Hi there! I make music and videos to go along with them. I play events a lot! But I'm looking to find new angles.

Here's my YouTube site:
http://www.youtube.com/user/neuronautvideos

Anyone know of a collaborative video event that I would fit into? Anyone know of other Tribes that might be worth me joining?

Peace,

telecine to disk vs. telecine to digibeta??

hey all -- i’m about to edit a 16mm music video on finalcut... for my final dvd and digibeta deliverables, i’m wondering what the smarter choice would be -- telecine uncompressed QT to disk, or telecine to digibeta?

in the end, would a telecine to uncompressed QT somehow yield a noticeably higher image quality than a telecine to digibeta?

and assuming i’m going to pay someone to handle the online -- would i be saving a significant amount of money pulling master footage right off the hard disk during the online edit, avoiding the cost of digitizing from a digibeta deck?

and are there any other advantages to having uncompressed masters on disk? e.g. would it give the online editor more room to maneuver (in terms of color correction and effects) than if he/she had to work off of digibeta masters?

thanks!

HELP! Uploading DV to mac book pro

It seems I have run into a situation. I just shot some footage on the Panasonic DVX 100A. It looks great by the way... On the camera's little monitor. I ran a fire wire cable from the camera to my Mac book pro and the tried to import it into iMovie 06 (Before you judge, I don't have FC)

It sees that my iMovie claims there was no camera attached and wouldn't import. I tried all the solutions the internet and help menu suggested
Turning on and off Camera/Computer
pulling the cable and reconnecting,
Even setting the time stamp on the camera. Still nothing. So I tried on my iMac G5 Desk top also iMovie 06 AND iMovie 08! I tried both fire wire ports and NOTHING! My iSight was recognized but not the DVX

Suggestions please?

Also I know someone who owns an OLD OLD DV camera. I have used it in the past and I know it can upload footage to both lap and desk top, If I use this camera for a play back to upload, will I suffer quality loss in the picture?

Ballpark estimate for a Fitness Video Production

Hi all -- I'm wondering.

I'm bidding on a "fitness DVD" series. I don't have any parameters of the job yet (this is preliminary), but aside from standard estimating parameters (hard and soft variables, adjustments for value, risk, etc), I also recognize that overall pricing may vary based on the region of our country where the work is performed.

If any of you have produced a fitness or dance DVD and are willing to share, where was the project performed and what was the budget for the project?

Thanks in advance!

RDiMT in association with Lightning in a Bottle Art & Music Festival are now accepting original short-form film & video submissions to showcase at our late night projection area this year.

We are putting a call out for engaging, funny, surreal, thought-provoking, avant-garde, ridiculous, sublime material but most importantly works generated by *you*. Entries should be no longer than 5 minutes, but anything that captures the imagination will be considered for screening, so don't put away that brilliant 11 minute documentary you made on the man-eating chipmunks of the African Sierra. We want to see it all.

please see the official announcement here:
Lightning in a Bottle is an interactive art & music festival, currently in its 3rd year at its current location in Santa Barbara, CA. Conceived by The Do Lab, an LA- based event production company that has created interactive environments within larger art & music festivals such as Coachella, Summer Sonic (Japan), & Electric Picnic (Ireland), LIB is an eclectic blend of music, art, performance, workshops and green energy that will take place over 4 days this year at the Live Oaks Campgrounds on May 23 - 26th. Powered almost entirely through solar energy & biodiesel, their mission is to create an event where participants can have amazing and fulfilling experiences whilst remaining fully conscious of the natural environment and minimizing their effect upon it.

http://lightninginabottle.org/2008/

Renegade Drive-In Movie Theatre (RDiMT) is a collective of outdoor-cinemaphiles that hold spontaneous movie screenings in random & covert locations, projecting a chosen film onto raw surfaces in unconventional locations found within the varied urban landscape of Los Angeles. Date & rendezvous point are usually announced 24-72 hours in advance and participants are encouraged to maintain a low profile when arriving at clandestine locations. Chosen films have been projected onto sides of trains, highway underpasses, deserted downtown alleys, abandoned buildings, etc. No (dark) surface goes unconsidered. Due to the barren nature of some of our chosen locations, the audiences must often bring their own seating, and of course whatever refreshments they wish to imbibe or share with others. We have yet to encounter any trouble from John Law, but the possibility is always there and well, adds to the whole experience.

T.V. Show Budget HELP!

We are pitching a Cooking show to sponsors & networks, we have some interest and have been asked for a budget. I'm an independent filmmaker and have very little T.V. experience. We are creating 2 budgets - one for the pilot and one for a 13 1/2-hour episodes.

Does anyone know where I might find sample T.V. budgets to look at? Or... can anyone advise me on rates for a Director, DP, and Editor for T.V. shows?

Annoying, the previous thread closed...hmm.

I exported a MP4 file from quicktime pro. I selected the default settings and enabled streaming.

I took that MP4 file and renamed it to FLV.

I uploaded that new FLV file over top an existing properly prepared FLV file that already worked correctly.

The renamed FLV file failed to display.

My guess is that this technique of renaming a MP4 to FLV does not work reliably.

The Phantom v10 480 frames-per-second camera

http://www.visionresearch.com/index.cfm?sector=htm/files&page=camera_v10_new

The Phantom v10 has just established a combination of recording speed and image resolution that will prove difficult for others to match. The Phantom v10's CMOS sensor, offers 480 frames-per-second at its full resolution of 2,400 x 1,800 active pixels. (You can achieve much higher frame rates at lower resolutions.) The dynamic range and image detail seen in the v10 images provide a sense of realism that has to be seen to be believed.

A New Genre

Birth.

About two decades of so called education which is today more a rat-race for learning tools to earn money rather than gain any true knowledge. Entering the rat race for about 40-50 years to earn money, at times selling your soul and then the obvious and unavoidable…..death !

In this non-stop, assembly line like transition from one end of the continuum to the other, relationships like parents, siblings, spouses and children and emotions like love, friendship and hatred, and, events like success and failure happen to us.

Whether or not we understand these dearest of relationships, the people we come across and claims to love, emotions, passions and events we encounter or the raison d'être of life itself is no more a concern in the rat-race for more, whether it be for money or material goods.

That joie de vivre is today nothing more than trinkets in malls and that we spend our lives running after something we will lose in less than a century along with the most precious of our gifts, LIFE itself,…is strangely enough not a concern for the PRAGMATIC and WORLDLY.

Where from we come, where to we go and why…the most logical questions a CEO of the biggest Fortune 500 may ask are not asked about the biggest projects of all…LIFE.

The reason for the brief event called LIFE…the reason for its joys and sorrows..the reason why we can never find what we are always REALLY after…that most elusive of all treasures…HAPPINESS…these are some questions we think of all our lives and never have time or opportunity to ask or ponder about...

This blog is an honest and creative endeavour to understand life and spread smiles on the faces of all those we rub our shoulders against by bringing along like minded people. This blog wishes to raise these questions on a platform which will bring on one stage …both believers and agnostics…men of God and men of the world…and a rare few who have bridged the divide to understand how LIFE ought to be truly LIVED.

The long term goal is to develop film scripts, TV serials and media entities which will espouse such ideas in an era of inane and mundane media.
This is a humble beginning in the internet era which has shown the power of ONE.

In the forthcoming blogs I will be discussing ideas for film scripts and TV serials, which I intend to grow into a movement with the sheer power of internet's bandwagon effect. In the future I also intend to include ads on this blog in order to start monetizing for the future endeavours.

So hop in and contribute if you too think out of the box and want a change for the better.

Aberrant behavior-auditions saturday the 19th 2263 mission (between 18th & 19th) 3:30-6:30 (Also looking for crew)

I'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Here is the plot:
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. Who are in a very self destructive relationship, there perfect for each-other except they literally kill each-other by being together. A lot of psycho-sexual/self mutilation-masochism in this one. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If your interested in acting check out the posting under the talent section.

Keep in mind the budget of this movie will probably stay around 25-35, 000 dollars , so just warning I can pay but not the highest rates

Thanks-
Jason

Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

I need before I even start:
Prostethetics/Makeup- There are many parts of my movie that need gore, ghoulish makeup or creating body casts for dreamlike effect (like a scene where they fall onto the ground and break like porcelain blood-paint spraying out of them creating a heart) but most importantly I need someone who can help make someone look anorexic, eye sockets reccessed , hips sticking out, ribs sticking out, shoulder blades, etc. I can't start without this because it's one of the main characters.

Boom-I have someone lined up for operating boom/mixing sound, but I'm not sure he'll always be available. I need someone who has at least some experience in this to help. I have equipment but having (better?) equipment would be great.

Props- It would be great to have someone who can assist in creating edible (or non toxic) chemicals, substances, materials for the main characters to ingest. It would also free me up to think about other things.

Lighting/ Art Department/ Set Design/Decoration/Locations- I need someone who can do a lot without a lot who can work with unusual materials. Who isn't too expensive or I won't be able to afford you. Also may be able to transform other locations into desired location.Things needed for instance underground bomb shelter turned into run down sorta apartment. Abandoned buildings. Offices. Fashion Show. A sewer, where the characters live in and eat off of trash.

Original posting:

Set Decorators/Builders:
Though the majority of the movie will be in real locations. There will be a few sets built, and sets that will be decorated to fit the movie. I am looking for people who have experience building sets (theater experience would be great) on a low budget. Resourcefullness in materials is needed (Meaning you can do a lot with not a lot). Building flats, painting, decorating.

Prosthetics/ Make-Up: Though this is not a gore horror movie. There is quite a few instances of gore. People who have experience in mold making, prostethics, sculpture. etc. would be very helpfull. Also people good at making people looking sickly or malnourished through make-up needed. In addition Emma May, the severe anorexic will need added pieces to protrude her brows and jaw, her ribs, collar bones, hip bones, etc to make herself appear much thinner. Actually a lot of make up needs from simple to complex through out the movie.

Vfx-Compositors- Though this will not be a special effects epic, there will be things needed. Good flashy two animations/composting for some of the fake commercials/promos. Possible fire and underwater animation. Some manipulation of the video -color fluctuations, shrinking an enlarging, simple morph effects, color globules to represent visual aberrations in the characters eye-sight. Some 3-D needed especailly those who are good working with modeling human figures. But mostly more simple 2-D basic 3-D stuff. I may do this myself, but send me a link to your work, and I might hire you for the movie.

Props: I will be doing much of this myself, but may need help in re-creating chemicals, materials, such as drano, soap, dirt, carpet, many other instances through-out the script, to create realistic looking edible (or at least non toxic ) substitutes for the substances they swallow.

Mechanical/Puppetry- Not needed for a lot of the movie. But there is a few scenes with Emma Mays giant snake like tape worm that slithers around. Also a scene where skull bowls start vomiting (have to read script to explain) Could do myself, just seeing if anyone else might be interested.

Lighting Designer: Though I will likely take over this role myself, and a lot of the footage will be shoot in the streets style. There will be a few locations that will be staying in for a long while in the script, and would like good, stylized lighting for maximum creepy effectiveness.

Costume: I already have a few people on board for this, but as this movie ends in a big Valentines Day Fashion Show. I am looking for people who could be commisioned for clothing for that event (and other sequences in the movie as well). Also, previously made pieces could work.

Underwater Camera- Anyone who would like to rent me an underwater camera, or who has experience filming underwater, this is needed for a few sequences.

Boom Mic/ Sound Mixer- I already have someone onboard for this, but never hurts to have a second position, or a backup

Pyro/ Fire Safety/Explosion - This really isn't needed for a lot of the movie. But there is one scenes where a whole room catches on fire (with possible stuntman that catches on fire, I made do this in special effects). There is another scenes where a home-made bomb blows a crack into a wall and makes it crumble. I want these scenes to come off effective and safe.

Security- Not throughout the whole movie, but there will be scenes where I will be filming in potentially dangerous locations, and a climax that will need crowd control

Legal/ Locations- I will probably do this myself, but if anyone has experience in finding or knowing of great locations, or securing permits for locations. I might be interested in working with you.

Production Assistants/Co-Ordinaters (I am sure you know what this means)

Music- I have most of the music worked out. But a band fell out that I really felt I needed for some sequences. If your music is post -rocky, slow core or has that aphex twin meets godspeed you black emperor I may be interested. The kind of bands I'm looking for: Mew, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Spiritualized, 65 days of static, Sigur Ros. Also in some music Portis-Heady could work.

Thanks
-Jason

H264 and Flash

Does anyone understand exactly how h264 can be used in Flash? I am so confused by the technical documents and I'm supposed to be a compression guru lol. What I want to know is if Flash supports h264 can we use that in something like Squeeze as a codec choice for making FLV's? Or does it simply mean that h264 vids will play via flash for a user if they don't have quicktime installed?

Quality wireless intercom units for live video shoots -- hoot with the shoot

I've tried getting away with Moto TalkAbouts in the past, headsets. Bottom line: they stink for what we're doing. This weekend I did a 6-cam shoot with 5 camera ops using a house intercom system (wired) and awesome headsets (with PTT or constant-on [lock])... WOAH.

Not only did we coordinate our shots much better, but we also had a hoot with the shoot. I'm convinced I need to invest in a decent system now.

Could anyone recommend a wireless handheld intercom system, 4-8 (or expandable) units, at a reasonable price, for use with video shoots at live venues (theatres and such). Heck, I'm willing to be creative.... how 'bout a home cordless phone system (like Uniden's PowerMax) that supports up to 6 or 8 receivers and has an "Intercom Mode"? What should I look out for?

I'm completely new to video production, and I admit that I've not endeavored to research on my own as yet. But I thought I"d inquire here for recommendations for a reasonably priced DV camera, that would be suitable for decent quality video for online content - demonstrations of techniques and products for example. How can I get the best quality without an enormous investment?

Thanks for any tips or info including suggestions as to where I can go online to learn more

Using Track On A Shoot

Hi All,

My next project involves using track for the camera. I have never shot using track, just wondering if anyone out there has?

Also wondering how it affects time in the form of setup and moving the track?

Also, what are the pitfalls, if any of using track?

My shot is in a large spacious lobby of a newly constructed hospital. I have walking and talking talent delivering lines. There are trees in the lobby area so I plan on using them as aribtrary foreground as well.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Is board+house sufficient?

Scenario: I'm doing a 5-cam shoot for a stage performance that includes a pit orchestra, singing, dancing, acting. Actors will have body packs -- I'm not sure about a house mic or pit mic for the orchestra. My plan was to record board out into one of my PD170 channels, and record house audio on the other channel + 4 other cams.

Question: An audio engineer who's done prior shows with me was not hired for this one. He would like to take multiple feeds from the board (body packs, orchestra [which he'd mic], house), record them on his hard drive, then re-mix after the show giving me a CD. He's done a decent job scaring me into believing that without his assistance the audio will be lousy, and that anything which goes wrong [e.g. they forget to bring up someone's body pack, so house audio would be better to insert] could be corrected by him to create a better production. Without him in this scenario, if there was a drop in the board feed, I would obviously bring up one (or more) of the camera mic's to compensate (they are "house" sound).

Would you pay extra out of the project budget to bring in the audio engineer in this scenario, or have you had good experiences using just camera mic's + board?

BUT, the thirty day trial is soon expiring. Are there other free-and-open-source or inexpensive options available for creating those flv files? And do they include the ability to add the video controls (like play/pause, progress bar, volume)?

Hi. I'm trying to locate sources for order and purchase of a training DVD. Don't yet have a specific title in mind.

Thesubject is in the realm of "hard skills". I'm looking for a good VHS or DVD on the subject of learning oxyacetylene welding skills.

My Google searches have come up with either dead ends or tons of irrelevant hits.

People on this tribe probably know who a lot of the distributors for DVDs are. Anyone know of good sources for this sort of thing? It would help me, so thanks in advance.

hey'all,
thought i'd forward this post over here in case anyone has any recommendations...

***

I'm .miQ, a Canadian, who after living in SF for a year andahalf moved to Estonia to be reunited with my Estonian g/f, Kristel.
We've since married, and have been living/working in Estonia for almost 3 years now.

We are both skilled multimedia producers/artists,
myself an audio engineer/video editor/DVD programmer and livePA.
Kristel does video/compositing/animation and photography/graphic design

www.orbital.ee

We're all set to make the move to Vancouver now ~ due to arrive on Dec.30th.

I was wondering if anyone had any leads on production houses in around the Vancouver area that would be looking for some extra help.
Could be audio/video for advertising, video games, recording studios, or anything else related that would be an option for earning a living back on the west coast.

It would be great to have some more ideas to consider.

Cheers from Estonia!!! ;)

Denver Multimedia...Anyone heard of or work with them?

I answered a craisglist ad from these guys, seeking freelance producers and offering the opportunity to makea couple of thousand bucks a month or more a month. They requested a link to some of my work online, which I provided. I few weeks later they responded, saying that they had viewed my samples and that I had been accepted as one of their producers.

They apparently produce 60 second web videos for various business, which consist of 10 seconds of the owners talking head intro from the manager, followed by 50 seconds of VO under b-roll shots in and around the business. They e-mail these shoots to local freelancers, and you are expected to be at the location for no more than an hour. The finished 60 second piece is due within 14 days of accepting the job.
It all seems straightforward enough, and there is no commitment for signing up.

Does anyone know anything about DMM - Denver Multi-media, or produced work for a company like this, of which there seem to be several around the net. Did you have a positive or negative experience, was it worth the time for the money. I forget what the pay scale was per piece, but it sounded likea a reasonable time commitment for a little extra cash every month. I'd like some feedback from someone familiar with these types of operations.

I've seen other freelance opportunities with fixed pay schedules, doing far more fun sounding projects, like TURN HERE, which does local travel guide pieces, or action sports websites. Has anyone here produced content for any of these companies?

HELP! Trying to win a student Film contest and get some gear!

Hello you guys!

I have been promoting our film madly - I've created
fliers to post, little 'cards' to hand out to people,
and I've sent out batches of emails in groups (I still
have lots more to send out!).

The only way we are going to win is if we ALL promote
like MAD! Below I have copied the email I sent out to
the Whaddya group - use it or change it to suit your
needs. I've attached the flier and 'cards' - you can
change them or use them as is. Please tell EVERYONE
YOU KNOW! Make sure they rate it!!! There are many
problems with the mac site - the main ones that affect
us are
1. You can't search by our movie name - it doesn't
work.
2. Using the email to a friend function on our page
sends a link that doesn't work (or it didn't last time
I checked).
3. The only thing that seems to work is searching by
our team name -
whaddyagonnadoaboutit

Thanks!

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? team entered the
Insomnia Film Festival
Turn 24 hours into a
3-minute masterpiece

The list of elements were given out at 9am EST on
October 13th, we shot at 3 locations, our visual
effects master Andrew Coggeshall was importing and
working while we set up for the next shots. I was
importing footage into Final Cut by 6pm. By 2am I had
picture-lock and I handed off to John Madden for
scoring. Dana Jae proved to be the marathan champion
by mixing and compressing at the wee hours of the
morning to get it uploaded by 9am EST on October 14th.

It was a fantastic learning experience - and we ended
up with a pretty cool little movie. AND WE NEED YOUR
HELP TO WIN!!! There were 3000 entries this year, so
competition will be tough. You can help by watching
and rating movies - the 25 entries with the highest
rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be
screened by industry professionals, including Barry
Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron. The
biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each
member of the team will receive a MacBook Pro with
Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake! THIS
PRIZE WILL HELP US MAKE MORE MOVIES!

So... I encourage you to check it out! Please tell
all of your friends & family, too! You have to create
a Mac ID - if you have ever ordered from Mac or
iTunes, you already have one. You will also need
Quicktime Player - available for free download at Mac.

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions presents...
8 3/4
Please watch and rate it by going to
http://edcommunity. apple.com/ insomnia_ fall07/
in the search field enter our team name:
whaddyagonnadoaboutit
8 and 3/4 will come up, click to watch

I would love to hear your comments! Thanks!

This coming year, my production company will be purchasing 2 Panasonic HVX200 cams, but in addition, I'll need smaller handheld cameras. This JVC cam claims it shoots in "full HD," 1080x1920. However, this is a hard drive camera with 60GB internal memory. So has anyone shot with it, and will the footage be able to smoothly be intercut with what I get from the HVX200?

Is there a site that has some simple instructions for this?

First Shoot With Panasonic P2

Hi All,

I just did my first shoot with the Panasonic P2. I had about 30 minutes to read the manual and figure out the basics of the camera.

We did an outdoor shot in full sun and the camera constantly zebra-stripped on me. I added the ND filters and that helped, but I could not get the camera to white balance so I shot and got over exposed footage.

I loved the OIS button, it really worked. The entire shot was handheld.

I shot in F3 function mode wich ,I believe was SPARK.

I shot to tape, there were no memory cards present and I set the mode to 480/30. Which I basically guessed was emulating a standard mini dv quality.

I was disapointed in the auto mode although it was more than likley operator error. But the auto mode should be more auto. The camera is loaded with tons of manual features and shooting modes.

I hope I get to use it again!

What is the name of the new format, is it called "HD"?

Also what connections do I need to connect the new, improved camera to my old and reliable windows computer?

Do cameras come with capture software?

How is Video transfer to film, for screening.

Glad I found this tribe. This week, I'm going into production on a short film. I', adapting a stag play for the screen. Considering that time is tight, I will ask my DP lets consider filming in video/digital.

Question(s)
Considering this has to be filmed in a short amount of time, what would be the best filming method with regards to filming in digital video. Also, this work has to be projected on the screen, so how does the process work with regards to filming in video, and then transferring that onto film stock to be projected on the screen. Has anyone done this before?

Also, what would be a good video camera (digital) to use, to film in, that will give me good quality. If anyone has seen the movie 'Inside Man,' then that's the image I would like my short film to look and feel like. Anyone know they use digital cameras to film that movie.

This work will be screen at a locale Art House.
Any help and ideas would go a long with for me, and thanks many,

Terry

Hi Mark or anyone willing to share some information with me!
I am employed by a local tv station in the Master Control Room and I am responsible for inserting 30 minutes to 1 hour spots. I noticed that some local ministors were buying air-time at a reasonable price. So myself and a couple of Real Estate Agents were interested in purchasing some air-time (13 thirty minutes to 1 hour spots), to display some homes they are offering for sale.
With the use of a regular digital video camera and some editing software we were interested in how to prepare a budget and how and whom to approach for underwriting.
Would you send a copy of your budget request and how to approach underwriters to my email address.

Best Way To Capture MiniDV Footage

Hi All,

I have a miniDV camcorder and I have been capturing footage on Windows XP SP2 via WindowsMovieMaker. My system is a 2Ghz AMD with 1Gb ram.

Even at the highest quality setting, I get footage that, I feel, could be better.

Just wondering what program I should be using to get the best quality footage out of my camera?

PS: I have tried...

Dazzle
Nero 6
Adobe Premiere (lots of drop out)
WindowsMovieMaker

WindowsMovieMaker makes the best quality files out of the list I have mentioned above.

Where's the $$ -- most profitable applications for videographers

OK -- so I've been doing shoots and editing for.
(1) The arts -- dance productions, high school musicals, etc. Selling DVDs for $30-$40 each. Depending on the size of the show, $$$ can be fair to OK.

(2) Weddings -- in WNY, people are used to paying $700-$2000.

(3) Demos and promos for musicians and bellydancers

I've gotten great feedback on the quality of the art/work I'm producing, and am setting out to make this a full-time sustaining career.

But averaging $1500K per job, even if I had one event every week (including winters, when there are known "downtimes"), that would max out at $78K. Then of course, there's expenses (assistants, travel, rental equipment, repairs, insurance, etc.)

So my question is -- what other ways, and in what industries, are videographers applying themselves to create sustainable income?

This is only a teaser of some of the "lighter" stuff I have in my portfolio. Anyone want to see video of suspensions? Or a girl being lifted by 2 pitch forks!? I have lots of fire performances too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z9uGGABar8 hope you enjoy

July 4th wedding -- any advice?

I'm an event videographer/producer who's been making productions of local dance and theatre productions for several years using 3-5 cam setups. I have been doing it part-time, but having now been laid off of a 16-year "day job", I've decided to make artistic videography of this sort a full-time profession.

Despite saying "I don't do weddings", I have the impression that weddings are part of the mainstay $$.

So I have two questions:
(1) What do you think of that statement, that weddings can be a key source of income?

(2) I'm shooting my 1st [paid] wedding this July 4th. Beach wedding. Outdoors. Ceremony around 4pm (sunlight). Reception later, through sunset. Ending with fireworks display. Shooting using two GL2, will have a camera-light, lapel and handheld wireless.

Anyone have tips for the setup or shots?

HERE'S THE MOLESTORS THAT THEY WILL BE MULTILATING ON THIS FIRST EVER PAY-PER-VIEW. BLOOD AND PILES OF OVARIES GUARANTEED! OKAY GIRLS, GET READY FOR YOUR MISSON AND REMEBER WHAT YOU SAID. THIS IS GOING TO BE SUCH JUSTICE! 32 MOLESTORS, BLOOD AND PILES OF OVARIES EVERYWHERE!

THE MOLESTORS:

28-year-old teacher Traci J. Tapp was arrested on charges of official misconduct and sexual crimes involving three male students. Tapp pleaded guilty yesterday to harassment by offensive touching in accordance with a plea agreement and was fined $100. The prosecutors asked for a probationary period but Judge James Isman declined. Tapp actually comments at Interested Participant's blog and this looks like she was falsely accused.

Substitute teacher Jacquelyn Faith Garrison, 19, allegedly made significant overtures, some sexual, through telephone calls and text messages toward a 15-year-old student, making him uncomfortable.

A 41-year-old English teacher at Scott Memorial Middle School, Karen Susan Patton, was arrested for allegedly engaging in sex with a 13-year-old student.

A 40-year-old teacher at Rothwell-Osnabruck Public School in Ingleside, Jennifer Dorland, was charged Wednesday with sexual assault of a 13-year-old male student. Police confirmed that the sexual incidents occurred at the school.

Earlier this month, 25-year-old Jessica Bowring pleaded guilty to one count of gross sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy. Yesterday, Bowring was sentenced in Somerset County Superior Court to five years in prison, with all but 9 months suspended. She'll also serve three years probation and have to register as a lifetime sex offender.

With the prevalence of teacher-student sex episodes in American schools, one would imagine that the last thing needed is a "Win A Date With Teacher" contest. Strangely, that's exactly what was offered by 36-year-old Strongsville High School teacher Christine Scarlett and the winner, 17-year-old Steven Bradigan, won not only the date but also regular sharpenings of his pencil.

Last August, a 27-year-old teacher at Ecole Pere Edgar T. LeBlanc, Renee Florence Gaudet, was charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a 13-year-old male student. In November, Gaudet pleaded guilty to sexual assault. Yesterday, Gaudet was sentenced to two years house arrest and told to go to a mental health clinic for assessment and necessary treatment.

A 46-year-old special education teacher at Ferguson Middle School, Cathy Heminghaus, has been charged with nineteen (19) felony counts of statutory sodomy resulting from allegedly engaging in oral sex with some of her students. Heminghaus apparently told her friends that she had performed oral sex on students since October. Her friends told school officials. The incidents occurred at the school and at one outside location.

Former English teacher at South Central High School, Katherine B. Tew, 31, was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a student and given a prison term of six to eight months, suspended, and two years probation. After her sex-toy student boyfriend, 17, spilled the beans last February, an investigation was launched which resulted in finding that Tew, known as "Katy" Tew, was engaging in an extended-term, passing-love-notes relationship with the boy. The nature of their relationship explained behavior that included late-night prancing in pajamas while pulling plugs from a bottle of tequila. Tew was arrested and released on $10,000 bail. Tew denied the charges, however, she was unable to explain why her cell phone records indicated that she had talked to the boy 129 times in a two-month period when she had only talked to her husband 67 times during the same period.

A 33-year-old married teacher at Warren Alternative School, Amy Bramhall, was arrested last Wednesday and charged with sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old student. According to court documents, teacher and student would party together with Bramhall bringing the booze and the boy providing marijuana.
